  14. UDEL for Windows is a utility to delete Files and/or Directories and sub-
  15. directories (even if not empty) with numerous options (see below).
  16.

  18. UDEL is distributed as shareware, which means if you've downloaded it from a
  19. bulletin board or obtained it from a friend, you can try it out before you
  20. decide whether you'd like to keep it.  Like all shareware, if you do decide to
  21. keep UDEL, you must pay a registration fee.
  22.  
  23. UDEL is a copyrighted program protected by both international and U.S. copy-
  24. right law.  If you obtained UDEL from an on-line computer service or bulletin
  25. board, a friend or colleague, or another similar source, you have an unre-
  26. gistered (trial) copy.
  27. You are authorized to use this copy without charge for a limited period of
  28. time (One month).  After this time is up, you must register and pay for
  29. UDEL to continue using it.

  31. UDEL is shipped with a DOS and a Windows version. The fee is for both ver-
  32. sions.
  33. You may (and must !) freely give your copy of UDEL but without discarding
  34. or modifiing any of the files in the package which MUST contain :

  83. __________________________ 2. HOW TO USE UDEL ? ____________________________

  86. What is UDEL ?
  87.  
  88. UDEL allows you to select and delete files AND directories across disks or
  89. drives if desired, all in (almost) one click.
  90. Several file specifications are allowed.
  91. Several options allow you to select with precision which files to delete.
  92. UDEL may also only list the selected files acting like a more powerful
  93. WHEREIS.

  96. !!!  BE CAREFUL  !!!

  98. This tool may be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
  99. As an example, when 'Delete Recursively' and 'Across Drives' check boxes
  100. are checked and the [All] drive is selected in the drives list box and
  101. '*.*' is typed in the 'Files/Directories to delete' edit box, UDEL
  102. deletes ALL files AND ALL directories on ALL mounted disks or partitions
  103. (incredible, isn't it ? Yes, but fast and efficient ! I hope you have a
  104. recent backup)

  108. To install UDEL for Windows, you only have to copy files UDELW.EXE and
  109. UDEL_ENW.HLP (this help file) to the same directory and add UDEL to the
  110. Program Manager or to your application launcher (Launch, METZ Runner or
  111. Desktop Helper, for example).

  118. General Controls
  119. ----------------

  121. > 'About...' push button
  122. Opens an about dialog box with a 'Register' button (don't forget to use this
  123. button).
  124.  
  125. > 'Help' push button
  126. Launches 'notepad.exe' with the 'UDEL_ENW.HLP' text file (this file).
  127.  
  128. > 'Save Options' push button
  129. Saves the state of the different option check boxes. At next launch of UDEL
  130. these options will be set automatically.

  133. Controls associated with the list of files to delete
  134. ----------------------------------------------------
  135.  
  136. > 'Files/Directories to delete' edit box
  137. This box contains a list of pathes of files and/or directories to delete.
  138. This specs may be typed by the user (for file specs with wildcard charac-
  139. ters) or added to the list via the two 'Add xxx Below' push buttons.
  140. If typed by the user, file specs MUST be separated by commas.

  142. > 'Add Dir. Below' push button
  143. If one directory or drive is selected in the above list box, the selected
  144. path is added to the 'Files...delete' edit box.
  145.  
  146. > 'Add File(s) Below' push button
  147. If one or several files are selected in the above list box, the selected
  148. file specs are added to the 'Files...delete' edit box.
  149.  
  150. > 'Last' push button
  151. When a list or delete operation is finished, the 'Files...delete' edit box
  152. is cleared. You may recall your last list of file specs with a click on this
  153. button.

  156. Option Controls
  157. ---------------
  158.  
  159. > 'Confirm Files' check box
  160. If checked, UDEL will ask you to confirm the deletion of each file and
  161. directory.
  162.  
  163. > 'Delete Hidden & System files' check box
  164. If checked, UDEL will also delete hidden files and system files.
  165.  
  166. > 'Delete read-only files' check box
  167. If checked, UDEL will also delete read-only files.
  168.  
  169. > 'Fill file with zeroes' check box
  170. If checked, UDEL will replace the content of the file with zeroes before
  171. deleting it. This prevents undelete operations with popular tools like
  172. PC-Tools or Norton Utilities.
  173.  
  174. > 'Delete According to date' check box
  175. If checked, UDEL will only delete files older or newer (depending on the
  176. checked radio button) than the date typed in the edit box.
  177.  
  178. > 'Delete Recursively' check box
  179. If checked, UDEL will also scan all sub-directories of the current directory
  180. to find and delete specified files.

  182. Following options work only if the 'Delete Recursively' option is checked.
  183.  
  184. > 'Across Partitions' check box and list box
  185. If checked, UDEL will not only scan the current drive but also selected
  186. drives in the list box.
  187.  
  188. > 'Confirm Directories' check box
  189. If checked, UDEL will ask you to confirm the deletion of each directory (but
  190. not of files in the directory if the corresponding check box is not checked).
  191.  
  192. > 'First Level Only' check box
  193. With the 'Delete Recursively' option checked, if \AAA\BBB and \AAA\CCC\BBB
  194. subdirectories are present in the current drive (same BBB name, but not at
  195. the same level in the tree), the file spec '\AAA\BBB' will delete both BBB
  196. subdirectories in the tree because all subdirectories of AAA will be scanned
  197. not only the \AAA\BBB one.
  198. This may be annoying if not wanted (!).
  199. The 'First Level' option tells UDEL to scan only from the first level of
  200. subdirectories.
  201. In the above example, only '\AAA\BBB' will be destroyed (including all its
  202. possible subdirectories) because UDEL will scan only the first level of
  203. files under 'AAA' to find a 'BBB' file or directory.

  206. Operation Controls
  207. ------------------

  209. > 'List Only' push button
  210. Will only list the found files according to the different files specs and
  211. selected options.
  212.  
  213. > 'Delete' push button
  214. The name of this button is clear. Click on it only if you are sure of what
  215. you are doing !
  216.  
  217. > 'Quit' push button
  218. The name of this button is also clear enough, but it is a little bit less
  219. dangerous. You may click on it even if you are not sure.

  227. 1. Because UDEL may be extremely dangerous, please, first click on the 'List
  228. Only' push button and inspect the list. Then, when you are sure, click on
  229. the 'Last' push button to recall your list of file specs, click on the
  230. 'Delete' one and pray.
  231.  
  232. 2. When the 'List Only' button is used, you may also select the files you
  233. really want to delete in the generated list of found files (the 'Files
  234. deleted' list box) and click the 'Delete' button.
  235.  
  236. 3. When UDEL is deleting files, the 'Quit' push button becomes a 'Stop !'
  237. push button. If you have 'Oops !' clicked on the 'Delete' button, you may
  238. stop UDEL with this stop button.

  240. 4. If you are not a registered user of UDEL, please don't click on the GREEN
  241. Informatique logo in the About box !
